Some general misgivings about making games.
By admin • Oct 25th, 2008 • Category: Flash Developers GuideHello there…
I was going through some blogs and forums in my free time when I came through some words of wisdom on the Mochi Forums.
There was this article posted by Archbob of fncgamesblog. I was moved by his post and I shall quote him just as it was:
I’ve seen many developers complain here about low sponsorship prices, not getting sponsorships, and “why is my game not making me rich via Mochi-Ads” complaints so for all newbies, I’m going to write some words of wisdom. This is not to discourage you. These are just some cold hard facts.
1. Most games do not get sponsor bids of thousands of dollars, most don’t even get bids of hundreds of dollars. In fact, most games, believe it or not, don’t get bids at all. As a sponsor I see many more games get the “no, not interested” treatment than otherwise.
2. Most games will not make you $1000 via mochi-ads per month. In fact, probably 99% of games do not even make $100 per month consistently after the initial release month. Games like Adrenaline are extremely rare. In all the games I’ve made, I have never had a game come close to making me $100/month consistent. I have sponsored over 50 games. The only games that come close to that are probably flash empires and elite forces defense.
3. If you are not getting any sponsorship offers and are not getting many views on Mochi-Ads, then most probably your game sucks. There is no easy way to put this: Most games that go through the mochi-feed just plain suck and are half-assed games I could put together in an hour or two. Don’t expect your labor to be netting you $500/hour, it won’t happen.
4. Don’t expect a lot of sites to pay you for non-exclusive site-locked versions of your game. In reality, only a few portals do this in order to promote their API. For most portal like mine, a site-locked version has no distribution and promotion power and is generally worthless to pay for. Just be satisfied that we allow mochi-ads in our games.
5. Be pro-active in distributing your game. Unless you have a mega-hit game like shift, your game will generally not distribute yourself. Do not just expect to turn on the Mochi-distribution or the FGL distribution list, that will get you nowhere. There is a list of 45 sites you can submit to on mochi-ads somewhere. That is a start, not an end. I never give out my own submission lists but its a lot more than 45 sites. Make your own lists. I also have distribution partners which I’ve built up over the years. Most sites will not accept your game, but you should not give up.
6. Addictinggames.com does not allow mochi-ads. If you can’t sell them non-exclusives, filter out the Ads for that domain and submit. Their promotional ability is worth filtering out ads for.
7. And above all, get better at flash and make good flash. If you continue to make crappy games, you’ll never get a good income from mochi. You really should get better.
I guess I completely agree with what he had to say. This applies to Mochi as well as all other advertisement systems like CPMStar.
I’d also recommend a visit to his blog and a visit to Mochi forums for all young game developers out there.
